Inputs

Usage and tariff

The kWh line on your bill, or a 12-month average.

All-in cents per kWh in the first tier. US residential averaged about 16-17 cents in 2023-2024, with wide state variation.

Usage billed at the tier 1 rate before the higher tier applies. Set equal to usage for a single flat rate.

Rate above the allowance. Set equal to the tier 1 rate if your plan is flat.

Customer or meter charge that applies regardless of usage.

What to check

  • The kWh line from your own bill, or a twelve-month average rather than one extreme month.
  • Tier thresholds and rates from the tariff sheet: the threshold is per month and often seasonal.
  • Fixed charges, minimum bills, and taxes, which the energy rate alone does not capture.
  • Whether your plan also has time-of-use windows; those belong in the TOU comparison.

Bill estimate from a two-tier energy rate plus a fixed charge. It does not model seasonal tier changes, time-of-use windows, demand charges, taxes, or riders, so it will differ from the utility bill. Use the tariff sheet for any decision about a rate plan change.
