EV Range and Charging Cost Calculator

Range added for a charging session, energy from the grid, time, cost, and cost per mile, with charging losses included.

Inputs

Vehicle and session

Usable pack capacity, which is usually a little below the marketing figure.

Real-world consumption. Highway speed, cold weather, and cabin heat push this up sharply.

Charge level when the session starts.

Where you stop. Daily charging usually stops at 80-90% for battery health.

Charging

Level 1 is about 1.4 kW, Level 2 typically 7.2-11.5 kW, DC fast charging 50-350 kW.

Energy stored per unit drawn, including onboard charger and thermal losses. 85-92% typical on AC.

Your off-peak or average charging rate.

What to check

  • Real-world consumption in Wh/mile from your own driving, not the EPA label; cold weather and highway speeds raise it substantially.
  • Charging efficiency: AC charging typically returns 85-92% of the energy drawn.
  • Whether the rate is a time-of-use off-peak rate, and whether the charger load pushes you into a higher tier.
  • Battery health: repeatedly charging past 90% or DC fast charging daily accelerates capacity loss.
  • Public DC fast charging price per kWh or per minute, which can exceed gasoline cost per mile.

Range and cost from the consumption and efficiency figures you enter. EPA-rated range is not modeled, and cold-weather range loss, elevation, towing, and HVAC use change consumption significantly. Charging power tapers above roughly 80% on DC fast chargers, so real fast-charge time is longer than the constant-power figure shown.
