EV Charging Cost Calculator

Monthly EV charging cost against gasoline, with charging losses, cost per mile for both, and annual savings.

Inputs

Driving and vehicle

Monthly miles driven.

Energy per 100 miles at the battery. Roughly 25 for an efficient sedan, 30 average, 40+ for a truck or in cold weather.

Energy stored per unit purchased. AC home charging is typically 85-92%; DC fast charging is higher.

Charging mix and rates

The remainder is priced at public fast-charger rates.

Your home rate, ideally an off-peak rate if you schedule charging.

Public DC fast charging price per kWh, or an effective per-kWh cost if billed per minute.

Gasoline comparison

Pump price for regular gasoline.

Combined MPG of the gasoline car you would otherwise drive.

Avoided oil changes, brakes, and fluids. Exclude tire wear, which is often higher for an EV.

What to check

  • Your real consumption in kWh/100 miles, which rises sharply in cold weather and on the highway.
  • Home charging efficiency from the vehicle or charger documentation: 85-92% typical on AC.
  • The actual home rate, ideally an off-peak rate if charging is scheduled overnight.
  • Public fast-charging prices per kWh or per minute, which vary widely and can exceed gasoline cost per mile.
  • Maintenance savings: excluding tires, which often wear faster on an EV.
